Silver Maple Pocket Tray
This products came about one day because I needed a place to store miscellaneous stuff from my pockets at the end of the day. It just so happened that a large order of quality oil tanned leather and maple had just arrived so I put my head down and came up with a series of little trays that are perfect for holding a variety of things, hence the name pocket tray because you can empty your pockets at the end of the day and everything is in one place the next day!
The process of making these trays is long and complex, with many hours of work going into each one. The board is first selected from local maple purchases slabs which have to be kiln dried and then seasoned so that the wood can stabilize. Once a piece is selected, any cracks or gaps are filled with epoxy to seal the wood and prevent particles from getting into any crevasses. We then miter the corners, insert the bottom of the tray and cut the slots for the wenge wood splines. At this point the piece is hand planed and sanded to a smooth finish. A food safe oil/beeswax topcoat rubbed and buffed to a soft sheen. Just wipe with a damp cloth after use and dry, do not soak in water or use dishwasher to clean.
